Date: 1st January, 2011

Hi, this is Kwokman. Happy New Year! Many people have New Year resolution. Could it be reading the Bible? It’s perplexing that many people find reading the entire bible difficult.  The bible, though high in aesthetic value, enriched with poetic formation, full of philosophical arguments, has already been translated into plain languages.  While understanding the bible may take one’s entire life, reading through it should not.  Unless one is illiterate, what makes it difficult to read through the bible?

Some people say that the bible is too long but anyone who has a college degree or a high school diploma probably had read more than the bible in volume every year they’re in school.  However, the lengthiness of the bible does present some challenges.  Since the contents of the bible are interrelated, it will be quite difficult to read through some passages without the knowledge of the others.  The size of the bible makes it more difficult because even if you’ve already read Exodus, chances are you’d have forgotten most of it by the time you read the Chronicles.

In order to overcome this challenge, one must read the bible systematically and quickly.  One simple way is reading a fixed number of chapters each day sequentially from Genesis to Revelation.  If you read five chapters a day, you could finish the entire Bible in just under eight months.  Ten chapters a day would get you through the bible three times a year.  The old testament would still be fresh in your mind when you read the new testament.  Reading the bible this way allows the readers to have a basic grasp of the contents throughout the bible.  Apparently, this kind of quick reading doesn’t provide in-depth understanding of each topic or section of the bible.  Nonetheless a few rounds of quick reading are essential in laying down a good foundation for further study.  Reading the bible is a life time duty of every Christian as Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'" (Matthew 1:4)  It is important to read the bible without ceasing and have a good foundation for bible study early on in each Christian’s life.

Reading the bible quickly and continuously doesn’t just help enable new believers read through the entire bible, but also makes bible reading easier for everyone.  Imagine driving a car in a big city with traffic lights and congestions everywhere.  Your car must stop and go repeatedly putting stress on the engine, the transmission and the breaks of the car.  Every time the car is stopped, it takes time, fuel and effort for the car to accelerate back to its normal running speed.  If one cruises on the highway without stopping, not only will you reach the destination more smoothly and quickly, the tear and wear on the car, the fuel required and the stress exerted upon the driver will also be drastically reduced.  Likewise, reading the bible without ceasing makes it a much more enjoyable and sustainable experience.
